Psoriasis is a word I had no knowledge of until 12 years ago when I met my future husband, Christopher. Through our 10 years of marriage, I have learned of the incredibly debilitating aspects of this disease. I have watched him endure pain, fatigue, cracked and bleeding skin, and sleepless nights because of lesions that covered 85% of his body. As if that wasn't bad enough, he also was exposed to discrimination, hurtful comments, and embarrassing stares. He told me many times that he felt like a mutant. Sometimes he would talk about what he thinks heaven is like, and the number one thing he saw was himself with clear skin.
In 2015 I was offered a job with the National Psoriasis Foundation, and our world has completely changed since then. We both found out more about the disease than any dermatologist had told us up until this point, and Christopher was able to get on a path of treatments that has nearly cleared up his skin. He is finally confident in who he is. He doesn't see this disease as a curse anymore, and has made it his mission to make sure others don't have to suffer like he did. NPF is doing this same thing for many others every day, and I am so fortunate that my family and myself get to be a part of it.
All money raised by Team NPF Cycle provides people with psoriatic disease the services they need to live well, while funding research for a cure.
